A typical day of hunting begins very early with the wrangler rounding up the horses. We saddle up, have breakfast and are usually over an hour down the trail by daylight. We generally stay out hunting all day, returning to camp after dark. This routine is subject to change due to hunting conditions, weather or guide's discretion. Our area is rough and relatively open country. Many hours are spent each day scanning the hillsides with binoculars and spotting scopes. Once game is spotted, we ride within a reasonable distance and finish the stalk on foot. The elk rut lasts most of the season. Bugling is a very effective and exciting way to hunt these elk. Other hunting techniques used are still-hunting and organized drives.
Our camp is on the Targhee National Forest, 20 miles south of Jackson, 25 miles south of Grand Teton National Park and 70 miles south of Yellowstone National Park. This camp is located in one of the finest combination elk and mule deer areas in the West. We also guide in Grand Teton National Park, Snake River Range and the Teton Wilderness. We maintain an excellent success ratio and harvest some fine trophies each year. Our success ratio consistently runs between 85-95% on elk, 70-80% on mule deer and 90-100% on black bear each year, success meaning game that is either killed, missed, wounded or turned down. Bull elk and buck deer killed average five points per side.
We are licensed and insured in accordance with the State Outfitters Board and operate under U.S. Forest Service permits.
PACK IN, CAMP HUNTS
September 15 - October 31, Elk-General license, Deer-Region H license, Moose Area 20, Mt. Goat Area 2 Type 1
The camp is a three-hour horse pack into camp at a elevation of 8,500 feet. We run five seven-day hunts from this camp each fall and take from four to six hunters at a time. The location of this camp gives us a wide range of our hunting territory.
ELK ARCHERY General License
There is a 14-day archery season prior to the rifle season. This hunt is conducted from our North Fork camp, which is an area that offers excellent bow hunting opportunities.
ELK MIGRATION November 1 - December 1, Areas 75, 79
Every November the herds of elk that summer in Yellowstone National Park migrate down to their winter range in Jackson Hole. We hunt these elk as they move through the Grand Teton National Park (Areas 75, 79). These hunts feature comfortable accommodations and an excellent opportunity to take a trophy bull. You will stay at a comfortable motel. Our trucks, trailers and horses give us the mobility necessary to hunt the different migration routes successfully. Prices do not include meals or lodging.
SHIRAS MOOSE September 9 - 0ctober 31, Area 20
Moose hunts in area 20 are based out of our North Fork camp. Hunts in all other areas will be either from a spike camp or town based. Preparation for your hunt begins weeks before your hunt is to begin with extensive scouting to locate the best trophies in your area. This is a private guided hunt, but may be combined with an elk hunt. Contact us for recommended areas to apply for. Success runs close to 100% on moose.
MOUNTAIN GOAT
The newly opened goat area encompasses our Elk & Deer area. We watch goats from our camp. A goat hunt could easily be combined with Elk or Deer. These are once-in-a-lifetime hunting tags. We have had 100% success on Trophy Class billies. An interested hunter should apply every year as there are no preference points for this license.
BLACK BEAR May 1 - June 15, September 1 - October 31
We hunt spring bear over baits with an excellent success rate on trophy bear (6 foot or better) and take many different color phases including black, brown, cinnamon and blonde. Spring bear hunts are town based from a motel or base camp. Fall bear hunts are camp based and may be combined with an elk or deer hunt for an additional fee. These are Mortality Quota based hunts.
